A 3-way bet is a type of bet with three potential outcomes. These outcomes are usually team A win, draw or team B win. A 3-way bet is also commonly referred to as a 1×2 bet (team 1, draw (x), team 2), but I will refer to it as 3-way betting for the rest of this article, which is the more common term here in Canada. Simply put, three-way betting odds offer three wagering options that focus on regulation time results only. They differ from two-way odds as a TIE is added as a third betting choice.
A 3 way handicap is an excellent bet which evens out teams and increases odds. In this wager, the bookmaker gives one of the competitors a goal/point advantage before the match starts and gives you three betting options, which are home team wins, away team wins, and draw. 3 Way Handicap Bet Explained
So what is handicap betting? And what’s the difference between 3-way handicap and an Asian handicap bet? If you want the 3 way handicap bet explained, pay close attention to the following example. It’s actually quite easy.
So, as I said, a handicap betmodifies the outcomeof the football game by levelling out the playing field. For example, FC Barcelona play Girona, the Catalans are huge favourites. To even things out, the bookmaker gives Girona a two-goal advantage before the match starts (+2). This means the following:
- Barcelona win 3:0 – the 3-way handicap outcome is 3:2 – 1
- Barcelona win 2:0 – the outcome is 2:2, so it’s a draw – X
- Barcelona wins 1:0 – the handicap result is 1:2, Barcelona lose, so it’s a handicap win for Girona – 2.
This is a very clear illustration of how the 3-way handicap market works. In contrast, an Asian variant of the bet has only two outcomes. This is because, in this market, the bookmaker evens the forces out by giving Girona a one-and-a-half goal advantage (+1.5). Take a look at the same match once again:
- Barcelona win 2:0 – the Asian handicap outcome is 2:1.5, so it’s still a Barca win – 1
- Barcelona wins 1:0 – final result in this 2-way market is 1:1.5, Barcelona lose, meaning this is a victory for Girona – 2.
As you can see, there is no draw option in the Asian variant of the market. This makes Asian bets much more popular with punters as they don’t have to worry about the goal difference so much. Backing Barcelona in it makes more sense as their two goals victory was only good enough for a draw in the 3-way handicap market. In Asian bets, however, there isn’t a draw option; therefore, that was a clear Catalan victory.
3 Way Handicap Bet Strategy
The best 3 way handicap bet strategy is to back massive favourites with higher stakes. This is because bets on teams which will win the match convincingly almost never fail the punter. What is more, regular odds to win on those matches are always too low. This makes backing a favourite in such a scenario pointless.
That’s why the 3-way handicap market is such a nice proposition for these events. Can you imagine a team such as Liverpool not putting 3 or 4 goals past Norwich? Backing the Reds in the regular match winner market will come with odds of 1.20 (1/5) tops. However, backing them to overturn a two-goal handicap deficit can come with enticing odds of 2.50 (3/2).

A 3-way handicap is when you are betting on a match in which one of the teams is given extra points/goals, and there are three possible outcomes. For example, let’s say Chelsea play West Ham (+1) and the Hammers get a one-goal advantage. The betting outcomes would be as follows:
- Chelsea 2:0 West Ham – Handicap outcome is 2:1 – 1 (the home team wins)
- Chelsea 2:1 West Ham – Handicap outcome is 2:2 – X (a draw)

A 3 way bet is when there are three possible outcomes to a wager. In this case - 1, X, 2.
- What is a 3 way bet in rugby?
A 3-way bet in rugby is backing the match to end in a home win, draw or an away win (1, X, 2). As you can see, no different than the football version.
- How do you place a 3 way bet?
You simply select one of the three outcomes, which are home win, draw, and away win - in other words, 1, X, 2- and then you place your bet.
This market is usually offered for in-play games. You should view it as: Match Total 3-way for X goals, where X can be any amount of goals like 2, 3, 4 and so on.
Let us review an example, where X = 3
You will be offered three selections:
Over 3.0 - which means your bet wins if there are 4 or more goals scored in the game. If there are 3 or less goals scored in the game, the bet is lost.
Under 3.0 - which means your bet wins if there are 2 or less goals scored in the game. If there are 3 or more goals scored, the bet is considered lost.
Exactly 3.0 - this selection means that there should be exactly 3 goals scored in the game, no more no less.
As you can see, this market is not offering any Return option, unlike usual Over/Under bet for goals scored. Please take that into the account, while making your choice.
